“the Village”
The West Village is oft referenced as simply, “the Village”, despite the existence of the crosstown East Village. The Village was the mecca of artistic development and social unrest in the 50s and 60s. The community has retained its beatnik vibe, but has developed into an effectual suburb of neighboring New York University, and also has some overspill from the Meatpacking district’s high-end shopping and boutiques. Nevertheless, the residential portions of the Village remain quaint and green.
Tree-lined streets, and row-houses are typical for the area, and while rent for an one-bedroom pushes upwards of $2500.00, the benefits of living in the Village including immediate access to some of NYCs best bars and restaurants, walking distance to SOHO and Meatpacking, as well as the rarity of having a true neighborhood feel in Manhattan. Absent the Upper West Side, few areas can feel so peaceful during the week; on the weekend, the Village does nightlife like few other neighborhoods in Manhattan.
The Architecture in the Village is eclectic, but still retains the standard NYC flavor. However, unlike many of the relatively plain row-houses of upper Manhattan, many doors in the Village have a unique style. Blue, red, and wrought-iron doors mirror the creative style that developed the Village so many years ago.
